Coronavirus (COVID-19) and your Life Insurance Cover

Does your Life Insurance Plan cover for the COVID-19 Pandemic? Are you prepared and covered if you test positive (or negative) for the Coronavirus?

While people who contract COVID-19 (coronavirus), who are under the age of 50 and have any pre-existing conditions are most likely to experience only flu-like symptoms, individuals with pre-existing conditions over the age of 50 – 80 are certainly at much greater risk, although these statistics have been identified by the (World Health Organisation) based on certain facts.

To prepare yourself – and your family – for possible infection of the coronavirus, there a few important steps to follow.

Step 1: “Should you experience a combination of the following symptoms, it is important to record these and also to note when these symptoms first began: fever, sore throat, dry cough or breathing difficulties.

Step 2: Call your local doctor or GP to explain the symptoms and to request advice about the best way to proceed.  It is not recommended that you go into the doctor’s consulting rooms because, if you do have the virus, it is vital that the virus does not spread to any of the staff or other patients in the doctor’s waiting room”. Local doctors will be prepared for the call and they will provide very clear guidelines about how to proceed in terms of the testing procedures.

If you don’t have a doctor you can call, there is a National Department of Health Coronavirus Hotline number (080 002 9999) or people can also contact the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NCID) on 082 883 9920 for testing purposes or your local community for disease control within your local jurisdiction? These hotlines were established for concerned citizens and have been specifically set up to deal with the outbreak”.

Medical Aid plans do stipulate different covers depending on whether you have tested positive for COVID-19 or negative for the virus.

Most life insurance companies should cover you for this Dread Disease (Critical illness), this is dependant on your life insurance company terms and conditions set out at the inception of your Life policy.

Let’s be of the understanding based on the statistics to date– there are more than 15 500 people who were diagnosed with the Covid-19 Virus globally and this number is to rise in the coming weeks, more than 5 000 people are serious cases, 5 500 people have died as a result and confirmed with more to follow? With the containment and stricter measures imposed globally by the government, this number should reduce the spread of the virus and be contained – we just don’t know for how long this will be?

I want to advise that you consider looking at your current Life Insurance portfolio to assess if your portfolio is covering you for any dread disease cover that provides well-round protection covering you in all aspects of addressing your Risk insurance needs comprehensively and what financial impact this may pose to you and your families’ financial security.
